Howdy👋🏾. The world of AI is evolving rapidly, and individuals and businesses are being forced to adapt. I’ve had the good fortune of a front-row seat to this evolution, exploring many of the latest AI models and the quickly growing suite of tools and platforms. In one of the early chapters, I discuss the levels OpenAI believes must be reached for an AI to become an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). For those unfamiliar, AGI is the holy grail—a computer system capable of processing information and reasoning at a human level. OpenAI defines these levels as:

• Level 1: Chatbots, natural language processing
• Level 2: Reasoners, applying logic and solving problems at a human level
• Level 3: Agents, performing additional actions autonomously
• Level 4: Innovators, creating new inventions
• Level 5: Organizers, comprehensive organizational capabilities

ChatGPT’s newest model release, OpenAI o1-preview, is a model with advanced reasoning abilities that moves beyond a chatbot to become a technology capable of solving complex problems.

The best way to measure this type of reasoning is to challenge the model with complex word problems that require it to do more than just respond like a language model but to understand and reason through the problem. The Verge recently tested o1 with a series of complex word problems, including this one:

“A princess is as old as the prince will be when the princess is twice as old as the prince was when the princess’s age was half the sum of their present age. What are the ages of the prince and princess? Provide all solutions to that question.”

This development marks a definitive move into Level 2 of OpenAI’s path to AGI. The next step—agentic AI, or agents capable of working truly autonomously—is on the horizon. Today, we see many examples of agents, but most still require human interaction, or what the tech world refers to as a “human in the loop.” As AI advances in reasoning and problem-solving, it can begin to face challenges like humans do, determining a path forward without needing human guidance.

The pace at which this technology is evolving is lightning-quick, which is why businesses must prepare their systems and data now to be ready for the rapidly advancing capabilities of AI. Now, onto my thoughts on tech & things:

This move raises an interesting question: Should your will dictate whether your digital likeness can continue to “work” after you’re gone?
